Bearcat Scanners and Encrypted Systems

01/11/2016
by Bearcat Scanner

Bearcatscanner.com has been receiving a number of questions regarding receiving frequencies on encrypted systems. No scanner can receive any channel that is encrypted.

As one might expect there are agencies that do not want their radio traffic to be available to the general public. Most of today's radio encryption systems utilize 256 bit encryption keys that are not made available to the public.

First Responders Aren't the Only Users of Bearcat Scanners

When I was a Search and Rescue (SAR) team member in Northwest Oregon my Bearcat scanner was constantly tuned to the Sheriff's and Fire Department frequencies. No sense in waiting for the call out, if I could hear the initial EMS traffic, I could gather my gear and be on the road often before the phone call came for help with a SAR incident.

Nowadays I see a need for everyone to be able to monitor emergency channels. There are times when knowing of a local or regional event can help us protect our loved ones and possibly lend aid to our overburdened fire and rescue heroes.

This past summer here in Oregon and across the West we had some devastating wildfires. Now that winter is upon us, the threat of soil erosion, land slides, and flooding make it imperative to "keep an ear out" for potential disaster. A quality radio scanner is still part of my kit and having one available no matter what part of the country you call home should be too!

Unfortunately natural disaster, fire, and medical emergencies are not the only events we need to remain vigilant for. The latest trend of terrorist attacks, including the recent LA School bomb hoax should make us all stand up and take notice. The ability to keep an ear on your local and regional events is more important now than ever. Doing so has never been easier with a Bearcat scanner! The Uniden BC345CRS Police and Weather Scanner is one of the easiest to use and is loaded with features everyone will appreciate.

Be sure to check out selection Bearcat products and post your thoughts or questions on emergency preparedness. Intelligent conversation is the best prevention for any emergency!

What type of scanner do I need?

12/04/2015
by Bearcat Scanner

There are are variety of scanners available on today's market. Be sure to to select the scanner that will receive the frequencies in use in your local region. You may need an Analog, Digital, or trunking scanner depending upon the service being used in your region.

The best way to determine the type of scanner you'll need is to consult with the county or region communications center. You'd be surprised how accessible this information is with just a phone call to your county, parish, or borrow main office.

If you can't find the information you need with a phone call then be sure to consult an internet directory that will list scanner frequencies in your region. Often a search with your favorite search engine for scanner frequencies + your zip code will reveal the information you need to make the right choice for a radio scanner that best suits your needs!
